Japan is the best place in the world to play Pokémon GO. We've played GO Fest in the US and in Europe. Japan wins every time.

Tokyo 2026 was our second GO Fest in Japan. Cream and I played for eight days straight, from the first raids of the morning until 8 p.m. We met up with friends from around the world. And we'd do it all again.
This guide is everything we'd tell a friend going to GO Fest Japan in 2027: which ticket to buy, what the park day is like, what the city days are like, and how to make it to the last day still standing.
Is Pokémon GO Fest Japan Worth It? My Quick Answer
- Yes, 100%. It's the best GO Fest we've been to. Japan has the most spawns, players, and raids.
- When: the last three Japan GO Fests ran at the end of May into early June. The 2027 city and dates aren't out yet.
- Buy the full ticket, the add-ons, and the extra city days. You'll be playing all day anyway.
- Budget about $650 to $1,150 each for the week, before flights, sharing a room.
- Pick the afternoon park session if it's in Tokyo again. The mornings get hot fast.
- Pack a phone cooler, a battery pack, and good data. Your phone works harder than you do.
- Plan to be tired. The hardest part isn't the game. It's eight days in a row.

When and Where Is Pokémon GO Fest Japan?
GO Fest is Pokémon GO's biggest in-person event of the year. Japan has hosted one each of the last three years, and the city changes each time.
| Year | City | Park | Dates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Sendai | Nanakita Park | May 30 to June 2 |
| 2025 | Osaka | Expo '70 Commemorative Park | May 29 to June 1 |
| 2026 | Tokyo | Odaiba and Aomi, by Tokyo Bay | May 29 to June 1 |
| 2027 | Not announced yet | Not announced yet | Not announced yet |
Sendai in 2024 ran from May 30 to June 2 at Nanakita Park.5 Osaka in 2025 ran from May 29 to June 1 at Expo '70 Commemorative Park.4 Tokyo in 2026 ran on the same dates, at Tokyo Waterfront City in Odaiba and Aomi.2 Three years in a row at the end of May is a pattern, not a promise. Hold off on flights until the official announcement.
May is our favorite month in Tokyo, so GO Fest is a great excuse to come early. There are plenty of things to do in Tokyo in May besides raids, from rose gardens to sumo.

Pokémon GO Fest Japan Tickets: Which One to Buy
Here's what the 2026 Tokyo tickets looked like. Expect something similar in 2027.1
| Ticket or add-on | 2026 price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| GO Fest ticket | ¥4,000 (about $25), early bird ¥3,500 | One park session plus a full day of city play |
| City Explorer | ¥3,000 (about $19) | One day of city play, no park |
| Extra citywide day | ¥3,000 per day | Event bonuses anywhere in the city that day |
| Egg-thusiast | ¥2,000 (about $13) | Quarter hatch distance, triple hatch XP, Candy, and Stardust |
| Raid Lover | ¥2,000 (about $13) | Up to 18 daily Raid Passes from Gyms, extra XP and Candy from raids |
We bought the full experience. That meant the GO Fest ticket with an afternoon park session on the last day, seven more citywide days, and both the Egg-thusiast and Raid Lover add-ons. All in, we paid about $363 for the two of us. That's about $180 each for eight days of play.
My advice: when you fly to an in-person GO Fest, get every add-on. You're playing so much that they pay off every single day. Skimping on a ¥2,000 add-on after paying for flights to Japan makes no sense.
How to Buy GO Fest Japan Tickets
Tickets are sold inside the Pokémon GO app.
- Open the app. Tap the Main Menu in Map View, then tap Events.
- Pick GO Fest where it says "Tickets Available," then choose your date and park session.
- Add your friends if you're buying for a group. Enter each Trainer's nickname. They have to be at least Great Friends with you, and everyone in the order gets the same date and time.
- Pay, and save the order ID from the confirmation page and email.
Tickets are nonrefundable. They can't be moved to another account unless you bought them as a gift for that Trainer. Park gameplay only works during the session on your ticket. In Tokyo, the extra city days started on Monday, May 25, four days before the park opened.
Going with a buddy? Add each other in the game now. Great Friends takes about a week of daily gifts or raids, so don't leave it to sale day.
How Fast Did GO Fest Japan Tickets Sell Out?
Fast. Tokyo 2026 tickets went on sale in early March. By the morning of March 4, Japan time, Pokémon GO Japan posted that the early bird tickets had sold out.9 Regular-price tickets went on sale about a week later.11
Then the park tickets sold out. On April 17, a limited batch went back on sale for a few sessions, at 8 a.m. Japan time, announced only that morning.10 By April 30, the park tickets were gone for good.
What If GO Fest Tickets Sell Out?
You still have options:
- Buy City Explorer. In 2026 it stayed on sale after the park tickets were gone. You get the city play and bonuses, just no park session and no Zeraora research.
- Watch for restocks. Follow the official Pokémon GO and Pokémon GO Japan accounts, and turn on notifications.
- Visit the park anyway. The decorations, photo spots, and character greetings were open to everyone.3
Our advice: be in the app the minute sales open, in Japan time. Decide on your session and your friends' nicknames before then.
Morning or Afternoon Session?
We usually pick the morning session on the first day. Not in Tokyo.
In late May, the sun in Tokyo comes up at about 4:30 a.m.6 By 10 a.m., when the morning session starts, it's already hot. The afternoon session ran from 4 to 8 p.m., and it was much nicer and cooler. You also get the sunset over the bay.
If 2027 lands somewhere else, check the session times and the sunrise. The rule is the same: avoid the midday sun.
What to Expect at the GO Fest Park
The park is huge. Every year it's a different place with a different layout, so you can't learn it ahead of time. You can learn what's in it.
At Tokyo 2026, the park was split into zones:3
- Team Up Zone for raids.
- Wonder Zone for a wide mix of Pokémon.
- Discovery Zone for hatching eggs and Field Research.
- Team GO Rocket Hideout for Shadow Raids.
- Trading Area and a Community Hub with exclusive stickers.
Then there's everything that isn't the game. Pikachu Ondo, a Bon Odori dance with Pikachu around a tall wooden tower, ran six times a day. A Pikachu dance stage ran nine times a day at Yume no Hiroba. Eevee, Growlithe, and Alolan Vulpix came out for greetings.
Ticket holders got a Special Research story that ended with Zeraora, caught with the Rainbow Bridge behind it. The last 30 minutes of every session was a Super Mega Raid against Mega Mewtwo X and Y, with over 1,000 Trainers in one lobby.

We did all of it. And it still wasn't enough time.
That's the catch with GO Fest. Four hours in the park goes fast, especially compared with the full park day at GO Tour. So go in with a plan:
- Know your must-dos. The Special Research steps, the raids you need, and the Super Mega Raid at the end.
- Check the stage and greeting times on the official site the day before.
- Save time for photos. The decorations are half the fun. The park also opens to people without a ticket, so a partner who doesn't play can still come along.
The best part for me was the visors. We wore our Pikachu visors all park day, and it's my favorite thing we did.

What the Citywide Days Are Like
This is where Japan beats every other GO Fest.
Spawns everywhere. Players everywhere. Raids everywhere. If there's a Pokémon you want, Japan is the best place to get it. And between raids, you get to explore the city, which is a lot of fun on its own.
The game even builds in your snack stops. FamilyMart is an official Pokémon GO partner, and about 16,000 of its convenience stores in Japan show up as PokéStops or Gyms.7 During GO Fest you don't want to stop for a real break. So we'd battle at a FamilyMart Gym, duck inside for a cold drink or a snack, and keep going.
In Tokyo, Ikebukuro was the hotspot for raids. We mostly played in Shinjuku, near where we lived, and in Ueno. Really, anywhere in Tokyo is good. For the in-between days, these are the best spots to play Pokémon GO in Tokyo, from Pokémon Centers to the Poké Lids.
We liked playing in Shinjuku most. Between raids, there are lots of things to do in Shinjuku, like the Godzilla head and the 3D cat.
GO Fest is also when we meet up with our Pokémon GO friends from around the world. In 2026, the park was full of players from Taiwan, Korea, and Europe. If you have friends in the game, this is the week to plan a meetup.
How to Get to the GO Fest Park
We took the train. In Tokyo, the Odaiba park areas are on the Yurikamome line (Daiba Station) and the Rinkai line (Tokyo Teleport Station).2 Both take a Suica card. If Tokyo's trains are new to you, here's how to get around Tokyo without a single paper ticket.
For the city days, you'll be on the train all day. A central base with lots of stations nearby saves you hours over the week. We lived in Shinjuku. Here's where to stay in Tokyo, area by area, with who each one suits.
How Much to Save for GO Fest Japan
Plan on about $650 to $1,150 each for the week, before flights, if two of you share a hotel room. Here's how that adds up at Tokyo prices from 2026. A different host city will change the hotel line most.
| What | Per person, 8 days | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| GO Fest tickets | about $180 | What we paid each for the full ticket, 7 extra city days, and both add-ons |
| Hotel | about $180 to $500 | A Tokyo business hotel is about $44 to $125 a night, split two ways |
| Food | about $160 to $320 | $20 to $40 a day on chain restaurants and convenience store meals |
| Trains | about $80 to $100 | The airport train both ways plus about 1,000 yen a day on Suica |
| Data | about $30 to $50 | An unlimited eSIM for one to two weeks |
| Total | about $650 to $1,150 | Plus flights, souvenirs, and phone gear |
Food in Japan is cheaper than most people expect. Two beef bowls at Matsuya cost us about $7, and a convenience store dinner for two was $10 to $15. The hotel is where your money goes. Book it the day the host city is announced, because every player in the world is booking the same week.
From Narita, the Skyliner to Ueno is 2,580 yen (about $16) each way. Here's how to get from Narita to Shinjuku if that's where you're staying. For data, Airalo's unlimited Japan plans were $26.50 for a week and $48 for 15 days in October 2026.12
Do You Need to Know Japanese for GO Fest?
No. In Tokyo, station signs use English letters and numbers, trains announce stops in English, and most chain restaurants have an English button on the ordering kiosk. Google Translate covers the rest.
A few customs matter more when you're playing all day:
- Step aside to raid. Don't stop in the middle of a station or a busy sidewalk. Move to the side, then play.
- Stand on the left of the escalator in Tokyo, and walk on the right.
- Keep it quiet on trains. No phone calls, and turn the game sound off.
- Carry your trash. Public bins are hard to find, so take it back to your hotel or a convenience store.
- Don't tip. Nobody expects it.
Most of Tokyo takes cards, but it's good to know where you'll still want cash or card in Japan. The rest of the rules that catch visitors out are in our list of dos and don'ts in Japan, from bowing at shrines to bagging your umbrella.
US passport holders can visit Japan for up to 90 days without a visa.13 If you hold another passport, check Japan's rules for your country before you book.
My Tips for Pokémon GO Fest Japan
1. Pace Yourself // It's a Marathon
The biggest issue with GO Fest Japan is how long it is. We played from the first raids of the morning until 8 p.m., all eight days. By the end, we were wiped.
Sleep properly between days, and rest when you can. Prep before you fly, too, so you're not sorting gear on day one.
2. Bring a Phone Cooler and a Battery Pack // Your Phone Will Overheat
Pokémon GO running all day drains a battery fast, and a hot phone slows down or shuts off. You need a phone cooler and a big battery pack. We don't play without either. Both are in our travel shop, along with the gear we carry every day.
3. Get Data Before You Land // Good Service Matters
You'll be online all day, every day. The Japanese carriers brought in extra mobile base stations for the park in 2026, and the network held up.3 Out in the city, you need your own data. We use Airalo everywhere we go, and you can get an Airalo eSIM before your trip so you're playing from the airport.
Pokémon GO wasn't the only app we had open all day. These are the apps for Tokyo we'd download before the flight.
4. Look After Your Feet // You'll Walk More Than You Think
We hit around 30,000 steps a day during GO Fest week. Wear shoes you've already walked in. Japanese drugstore foot patches and a hot bath every night got us through. Shoes matter most, so here's what to wear in Tokyo for all that walking.
5. Beat the Heat // Late May Is Warm
Late May in Japan is warm and gets sticky. Bring a refillable bottle, sunscreen, a hat or a parasol, a small fan, and a towel.
Is Pokémon GO Fest Japan Worth the Trip?
Yes. If you love the game, GO Fest Japan is the one to fly for. Get the full ticket and the add-ons, pick the cooler session, and give yourself a few slow days before you fly home. Our other must-fly event is in February: here's how we plan Pokémon GO Tour Los Angeles.
