Picking where to live is one of the biggest and hardest decisions you make as a digital nomad. You've never lived in the city, and you don't really know it yet. You need to watch your budget, but you don't want to end up stuck far out. I'm willing to pay more to be in the right spot, and happy to save if the cheaper area isn't that far away. The problem is that a map doesn't tell you which is which. (Only in town for a few days? Our guide to where to stay in Kuala Lumpur is the one you want.)

That's exactly where I went wrong in Kuala Lumpur (KL). Some of the Airbnb listings I liked best were in Bangsar, and they were cheaper. But on the map Bangsar looked far away, so I scrolled right past them.
Cream and I booked a condo in Bukit Bintang instead and lived there for three months, from February to May 2026. By the end, I'd learned that Bangsar is one train stop from KL Sentral. KL is a lot smaller than it looks.
Here are the best neighborhoods in Kuala Lumpur for digital nomads as I see them now: the two I'd pick, and the two I'd give a real chance next time.

The Best Neighborhoods in KL for Digital Nomads: My Quick Answer
For a first long stay, Bukit Bintang is the best base in Kuala Lumpur: you can reach the malls, cafes and food streets without sitting in traffic. Next time, I'd live in a condo right next to The Exchange TRX, so the mall, a food court and the cinema are an elevator ride away. If you want more space for your money, Bangsar and Mont Kiara are closer than they look on a map, and KL is small enough that you won't feel stranded.
| Area | Best for | Getting around | Did we live there? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bukit Bintang | First long stay, being in the middle of everything | Monorail, MRT, walkways, Grab | Yes, 3 months |
| The Exchange TRX | Convenience, food and movies downstairs | TRX MRT interchange, Grab | No, it's where we'd stay next time |
| Bangsar | Cheaper listings, neighborhood feel | LRT Kelana Jaya Line, Grab | No |
| Mont Kiara | Quiet, expat condo living | Grab (no train station) | No |

The 2 Areas I'd Actually Pick
1. Bukit Bintang // Where We Lived for Three Months
We stayed at Ceylonz Suites in the Bukit Bintang area, in a unit we booked from a private host on Airbnb for about $1,000 a month (here's our full Ceylonz Suites review). For a first stay in KL, I think Bukit Bintang is the best overall base for a nomad.
Before we arrived, I treated KLCC (the area around the Petronas Towers) and Bukit Bintang as two separate places. In reality, they are so close together they practically bleed into one another. Living in the middle meant we could get to cafes, coworking spaces and shopping malls without dealing with KL's rush-hour traffic.

We also worked from the condo every day. We prefer that to coworking, and the Wi-Fi was good. The rooftop pool was the other big win, because KL wakes up late and we don't.

What I'd change: it was a nice place and we enjoyed it, but I wouldn't book the same building again. Ceylonz had a lot of guests staying one or two nights, so it got loud, and next time I want a building that feels truly residential. The elevators were the other headache. Grab food delivery in KL can take an hour, and drivers there didn't drop food off at the lobby like they did in Bangkok. I had to meet the driver downstairs, and sometimes I had to leave the unit 15 to 20 minutes before he arrived just to get through the elevator wait.
Tip
Before you book a month in a KL condo, ask the host how food deliveries work in that building, and how busy the elevators get in the evening.

2. The Exchange TRX // Where I'd Stay Next Time
I already know where I want to stay on our next trip: right next to The Exchange TRX, the new lifestyle mall in the Tun Razak Exchange district, just south of Bukit Bintang.1
It was our favorite place in KL, and we went there more than anywhere else. The main reason was the cinema, Aurum Theatre: while we were there, it replayed all of the movies nominated for the Oscars, so we kept going back. The food court was good too, so an evening there usually meant a film, a slow lap of the shops, and something to eat before heading home. A movie is also our favorite way to wait out KL's afternoon storms.

From Ceylonz, we took a Grab there every time. That's why I'd rather live next door. The building I have my eye on is TRX Residences, a set of residential towers connected directly to the mall and next to the TRX MRT interchange station.2 We haven't been inside, so this is a wish, not a review. But with Grab delivery as slow as it is in KL, being able to take the elevator down and walk into the mall for lunch is my idea of the ultimate convenience.

2 Alternatives We Didn't Live In (But Would Consider)
We never went to either of these, so this isn't a first-hand review. It's the lesson I wish I'd learned before booking: because KL is a mid-sized city, staying a bit further out isn't the isolating experience it would be in a sprawl like Bangkok.
3. Bangsar // Cheaper Listings, Closer Than It Looks
When I was searching Airbnb, Bangsar had a lot of listings I liked, and they were cheaper than in Bukit Bintang. I passed on them because I thought Bangsar was far from everything. It isn't. The Bank Rakyat-Bangsar LRT station is on the Kelana Jaya Line, one stop from KL Sentral, and the same line runs straight to KLCC.3
If you're wondering where expats live in KL, Bangsar is one of the main answers: it has a reputation as an expat-friendly neighborhood with a strong cafe scene, and next door, Bangsar South is a newer area of offices and condos. If Bukit Bintang feels like too much city for a month, this is where I'd look first. The map below shows what's available in Bangsar for your dates, or you can browse places to stay in Bangsar as a list.
4. Mont Kiara // Quiet Condo Living, Grab Only
Mont Kiara is a condo-heavy expat area northwest of the center, about 11 km (7 miles) from KLCC.4 On paper, the draw is value: the condos are cheaper, many have big skyline views, and the area has a quieter, family-friendly expat feel.
The catch is transport. Mont Kiara has no LRT or MRT station, so you'd rely on Grab to get anywhere.5 After our experience with slow deliveries and busy roads, I'd only choose it if you want to spend most of your time at home and don't mind that. If that sounds like you, here's what's available in Mont Kiara.
What to Look for in a Month-Long KL Condo
- A residential building. Look for a building where people live, not one full of one- and two-night guests. Recent reviews that mention noise are a warning sign.
- Enough elevators. Ask how long the elevator wait is at dinnertime, when everyone is heading down to meet their delivery.
- A gym and pool you can use early. Many KL cafes don't open until 10:00 AM, so a gym or pool in your building makes early mornings easy.
- Wi-Fi you've seen tested. Ask the host for a recent speed test if you'll work from home.
- The monthly price. We booked through Airbnb for the full three months (here's how we booked it). Stays of 28 nights or more usually get the host's monthly discount, which brings the nightly rate down a lot.6
📶 Get Online Before You Land: You'll want mobile data to book your first Grab from the airport, and to hotspot your laptop if the condo Wi-Fi ever drops. Get an Airalo eSIM before you land so you're connected when you arrive.
So, Where Should You Base Yourself?
You can't go far wrong if you stick to the areas above. On a first long stay, book in Bukit Bintang so you're in the middle of everything. If you value convenience and want to beat the slow deliveries, look for a residential condo right next to The Exchange TRX. And if the best-value listings are in Bangsar, don't scroll past them the way I did.
