Nasi kandar is everywhere in Kuala Lumpur, and nearly every counter claims to be the best. Then there's the name problem: Line Clear is the most famous nasi kandar in Malaysia, and several restaurants around KL use it. If you only have a few meals in the city, how do you know which one is worth it?

Cream and I learned the answer by eating it, a lot. While we lived in KL for three months in early 2026, Line Clear was our most-ordered meal on Grab. We'd had it delivered so many times that when we finally went to the restaurant itself, we asked for the exact same plate and then added everything we'd never tried.
It's the nasi kandar we measure every other plate against. This is our Line Clear KL review: which shop to go to, what to order, what we paid, and why it's our favorite food in the world.

Is Line Clear in KL Worth It? My Quick Answer
Yes. Line Clear in Kampung Baru is the best nasi kandar we had in Kuala Lumpur, and our score is 10 out of 10. The fried chicken with caramelized onions is the reason to go, the mix of curries is perfect, and it's packed with flavor without being heavy or greasy. Two of us ate for $11.92.

Which Line Clear Is the Real One?
Line Clear started as a nasi kandar stall on Jalan Penang in George Town, Penang, and it's one of the most famous names in Malaysian food.2 Its fame is also why the name gets borrowed.
The Kuala Lumpur shop we love is in Kampung Baru, on Jalan Raja Abdullah. According to Malaysian news reports, it was opened by the family behind the Penang original, and in 2016 it renamed itself LC so customers could tell it apart from restaurants in places like Ampang and Kampung Pandan that use the Line Clear name with no connection to the original.1 That's why you'll often see it listed as LC.
If you want Line Clear in KL, this is the one to search for.

Arriving at Line Clear: What to Expect
We got there around 9:00 a.m., which turned out to be the perfect time. It wasn't busy, and everyone was helpful.
The staff helped us build our plates at the counter, then brought them over to our table. We watched them make our curry mix: a little of what looked like the fish curry, some chicken curry, and a few others, all ladled over the rice. We asked for it banjir, which means "flooded", so the rice soaks up all of it.
If you've never ordered nasi kandar, it's simple: you point at what you want from the counter, and the server finishes the plate with curry. The nasi kandar section of our must-eat foods guide covers the basics.

What We Ordered at Line Clear
Our usual Grab order is combo B, the set with the ayam goreng bawang. At the restaurant we asked for the same thing, then added a few things we'd never ordered with nasi kandar: the beef, fried bitter gourd, and papadum.
1. Ayam Goreng Bawang // The Reason to Go
Ayam goreng bawang is fried chicken with onions. Line Clear's has a deep red fry and comes covered in a pile of caramelized onions.
Cream started with it, and the first word out of him was "Wa!" It's spicy right away, the chicken underneath is tender, and the onions add a sweetness that makes every bite different. If you only order one thing, this is it.

2. The Mixed Curry and Rice // The Flavor We Kept Coming Back For
The curry is why Line Clear is our favorite. Usually we just mix everything together, but this time Cream tasted the curry rice on its own first, and his verdict was simple: "The mix of these curries is perfect. I love Line Clear."
Then you mix it all up. You get spice from the curries, sweetness from the onions, a little salt, and crunch from the cabbage. The soft onions and rice against the crisp cabbage make the texture as good as the flavor. And everything gets eaten with the chicken.

3. Cabbage and Caramelized Onions // The Supporting Cast
The cabbage is bright and colorful, and it's there to be mixed into the rice for crunch. The caramelized onions come on the chicken, and they add extra on the side. They have a lot of flavor and a little spice of their own, and they're even better once they're mixed into the rice.

4. Beef // Tender Enough to Cut With a Spoon
I usually get only chicken with nasi kandar, so the beef was the add-on we were most excited about. It was tender enough to slice with a spoon. It's covered in the same caramelized onions, with a spice blend we couldn't pick apart, and it's even better mixed with everything else.

5. Fried Bitter Gourd // Something New
Bitter gourd, called peria in Malay, was new to us with nasi kandar. Fried, it has a unique flavor, a little bitter and a little salty. On its own it's interesting; mixed into the rice, it adds a soft crunch on top. Try it if you like bitter flavors.

6. Papadum // A Crispy Spoon
The papadum is a light, thin, papery cracker. Cream tried it on its own, then used it to scoop up a bite of curry rice, and it's a great delivery vehicle. That's part of what makes nasi kandar fun: you can eat it with your hands, with a spoon, or dip-style with a papadum.

7. Sirap Bandung // Our Favorite Drink in Malaysia
Sirap bandung is rose syrup with milk, and it comes out bright pink. It's our favorite drink in Malaysia, and it's the perfect drink for this meal, because the sweet, cold milk takes the edge off the spice.

Why Line Clear Is Our Favorite
It comes down to the curry. Line Clear has the curry and the flavor we love, and it isn't heavy or greasy, so it doesn't weigh you down the way a big plate of nasi kandar can.
That's also why we ordered it all the time. It's the plate I could eat every day.

Getting Line Clear on Grab Delivery
Line Clear was our most frequent Grab order in KL, and combo B was the one we always got. If you can't find it under Line Clear, search for LC.
Delivery in KL can take an hour, sometimes two, on weekends and holidays, so order before you're starving. If you'd rather avoid the midday heat (our guide to the best time to visit Kuala Lumpur explains just how hot it gets), delivery is the easy way to eat it.

What We Didn't Love
Honestly, nothing. We ate this food more than anything else in KL and never got tired of it. A few things to know before you go:
- It's spicy right away. Tell the server if you want less curry on your rice, and keep a sirap bandung close.
- It's a big meal. It's not greasy, but a full plate still left Cream ready for a nap.
- It's a simple local shop. This is a Mamak restaurant, not a sit-down dining room. Come for the food.
Who Line Clear Is For
Line Clear is for anyone who wants the best version of Malaysia's most flavorful rice dish, and especially for anyone who found other nasi kandar too heavy. If you like Indian curries or fried chicken, you'll feel at home.
If you can't handle any spice, ask for the curry on the side so you can add a little at a time. And if you're in Kampung Baru anyway, it's an easy add to a morning of eating in one of KL's most traditional neighborhoods.

💡 Getting Around KL:
You'll want mobile data to book a Grab, order delivery, or find the right Line Clear. The easiest way is to get an Airalo eSIM before you land in Malaysia, so it works the moment you arrive.
