Flying all the way to Japan to eat at McDonald's sounds like a waste of a meal. Ramen and sushi are on every corner, and you're heading for the golden arches?

We do it anyway, in every country we visit. Another country's McDonald's is a small window into everyday life: who eats there, which menu items exist nowhere else, and sometimes just a familiar burger and a cool, air-conditioned seat. If you're traveling with a picky eater, it can save the day.
So Cream and I walked into a McDonald's in Shinjuku for breakfast, came back for lunch, and worked our way through 15 things we'd never seen at home: pancakes with a mystery topping, a burger made of whole shrimp, and a melon soda so green it almost glows. We'd already done McDonald's in Malaysia and thought we knew the drill. Japan was even more different, and it walked away with a perfect 10 from us.
Is McDonald's in Japan Different? My Quick Answer
Yes, very, and our score is a perfect 10/10. The fries and nuggets are the same, but McDonald's in Japan has a whole menu you can't get at home: the Chicken Tatsuta, the Samurai Mac, the Ebi Filet-O shrimp burger, teriyaki pork burgers, pancakes with an apple topping, and drinks like Fanta Melon. Short on stomach space? Our top three are the Chicken Tatsuta, the Ebi Filet-O, and the Samurai Mac. Skip the Shaka Shaka Chicken.
🍟 MCDONALD'S JAPAN EXCLUSIVES WE TRIED
- Chicken Tatsuta: Soy-and-ginger fried chicken with cabbage on a soft, dinner-roll-style bun. Our favorite of the day.
- Samurai Mac: Thick beef with a glazed soy sauce, egg, and bacon.
- Ebi Filet-O: A panko-fried patty made of whole shrimp.
- Teriyaki McBurger and McPork: Pork patties with teriyaki-style sauce.
- Mega Muffin: A double-sausage breakfast muffin with egg, cheese, and bacon.
- Petite Pancakes: Tiny pancakes with an apple-and-cream topping.
- Fanta Melon: A bright green melon soda.

Our Experience at McDonald's in Shinjuku
The best surprise came before we ate anything: the self-order kiosk has an English option. We could scroll the entire menu, see photos of everything, and order 15 items without a word of Japanese. If you're nervous about ordering food in Japan, McDonald's is the easiest place to start.
📶 Get Online Before You Land: The kiosk speaks English, but most of Japan's menus, signs, and station exits don't. Mobile data for Google Maps and Google Translate makes finding the right McDonald's (and the right exit from Shinjuku Station) much easier. Get an Airalo eSIM before you land so you're connected from the airport.
In the morning it was busier than you'd think, but not loud at all. Everyone was eating in silence, headphones on. Lunch was even busier. It was almost impossible to find a seat, and the room got louder, but it was never loud. Japan, even when it's busy, isn't a loud country.
It was also clean. Clean and quiet is about as Japanese as a McDonald's can get.
Tip
Breakfast (Asa Mac) runs until 10:30 AM at most McDonald's in Japan, and the regular menu starts at 10:30 AM. To try both like we did, come back for a second visit after 10:30.

What to Order for Breakfast at McDonald's in Japan
Breakfast (Asa Mac) is where McDonald's Japan gets playful: a Gundam-branded chicken sandwich, pancakes with a topping that isn't what it looks like, a potato pie, and nugget sauces you won't find anywhere else. Several of these were limited-time promotions in May 2026, so your menu will look a little different; see the note at the end of this section.

1. Chicken Tatsuta // Our Favorite of the Day
The Chicken Tatsuta was part of a Mobile Suit Gundam promotion when we visited, and it was the item Cream was most excited about.1 It was also the one he'd order again first.
The bun is unique. It looks like a dinner roll and it's very soft, and so is the chicken. The patty seemed to be dark meat, which keeps it juicy, though it's not as crispy as you'd expect. The sauce has a little zing that reminded him of horseradish: "Maybe like if Big Mac sauce had horseradish in it." The cabbage gives the whole soft sandwich a light crunch.

2. Pompompurin Frappé // Sweet, With a Sanrio Cup
This cold drink with whipped cream had a Hello Kitty theme and a really nice color. It's thick and creamy, and it tasted exactly like maple syrup to us, which makes it very sweet. The whipped cream on top was fluffy, "a little marshmallowy". Officially it's a creamy pudding flavor, named after Pompompurin, the Sanrio dog character.2

3. McFizz Citrus Yogurt // Pretty, but Where's the Yogurt?
Another Gundam promotion item, and the prettiest thing on the tray: layers of color in a clear cup. It's fizzy, with what tastes like orange at the bottom and soda water on top, so it goes from not sweet at all to very sweet until you mix it. Once mixed, it's nice. But we couldn't find the yogurt anywhere, in flavor or texture.
4. Mega Muffin // Big, but Familiar
The Mega Muffin is a Japan-only breakfast sandwich, and it's huge: two sausage patties, egg, cheese, bacon, and a sweet sauce we think was barbecue. The sausage and egg are standard (the egg tasted fresh). The bacon is more like a thin, limp ham than crispy bacon. It's good, but it's very close to a standard Western breakfast sandwich, so it's the one to skip if you're short on stomach space.

5. Bacon Potato Pie // The Surprise of the Morning
Opening the box was so satisfying. The shell is crispy with an interesting texture on the side, and inside it's like a light, creamy potato soup with a smoked bacon flavor. We liked this one, and it's not something you'd ever find at a McDonald's back in the US.

6. Petite Pancakes // Not Maple Syrup
The Petite Pancakes are a Japanese McDonald's staple: small, thin pancakes that come with a syrup-and-butter dispenser. On their own they're light, fluffy, and not very sweet.
Then came the dispenser. Expectations versus reality: the "syrup" came out much faster than the "butter" and globbed up in one corner. And it didn't taste like maple at all. It tasted like apple and cinnamon, which caught us completely off guard. That's because the topping in Japan is apple and cream, not maple syrup and butter.6 It's much less sweet than the Frappé.

7. Chicken McNuggets With Japan-Only Sauces // Get Them for the Sauces
The nuggets are the same as anywhere. The sauces are what make them worth ordering. We had two limited-time ones:
- Salty Lemon Tartar Sauce: very salty and very lemony. Think lemon pepper seasoning, but made with lemon salt. Interesting, but strong.
- Yakiniku sauce: yakiniku is Japanese grilled meat, and the sauce tastes like soy with ginger and maybe sesame, "like a fresh teriyaki".3
Cream tried double-dunking one nugget in both. Lesson learned: one sauce at a time.

8. Corn and Edamame // Vegetables, and Nothing More
You can order a cup of corn and edamame (young soybeans) as a side, which is unusual for McDonald's. It tastes exactly like what it is: plain, unseasoned vegetables, like frozen corn and edamame that were microwaved. It's there if you want some vegetables with your meal, not for the flavor.
⏳ Limited-Time Menu Alert: The Chicken Tatsuta Gundam campaign, the McFizz Citrus Yogurt, the Pompompurin Frappé, the two nugget sauces, and the Grimace Shake were all spring 2026 promotions that ended around mid- to late May. McDonald's Japan rotates new limited-time burgers, drinks, and anime tie-ins every few weeks, so check the promo board by the kiosk when you visit.
What to Order for Lunch at McDonald's in Japan
Lunch is where the Japan-only burgers are: a soy-glazed Samurai Mac, a burger made of whole shrimp, two teriyaki pork burgers to compare side by side, and a chicken cutlet you shake in a bag. We came back after 10:30, when the regular menu starts.7

1. Samurai Mac With Egg and Bacon // The One We Wish Was in the US
The Samurai Mac is a signature of McDonald's Japan and you have to try it. On the menu it goes by a longer name. The one we had is on the regular Samurai Mac menu as 炙り醤油風 たまごベーコン肉厚ビーフ, roughly "grilled soy sauce-style egg and bacon thick beef", so look for the Samurai Mac with egg and bacon on the kiosk.5
It's a big one. The bun seemed like a brioche, with cheese at the bottom, a thick beef patty with a lot of sauce, then egg, bacon, lettuce, and what tasted like mayonnaise. The sauce is what makes it: a glazed soy sauce. The egg was fresh, and the bacon was more ham than crispy bacon again. Cream would get it again, and wished we had it in the US.

2. Ebi Filet-O // The Shrimp Burger Everyone Should Try
We'd had the Ebi Filet-O on our first trip to Japan in spring 2025, and it's one of Cream's favorites. Ebi means shrimp. The panko-fried patty is made of whole little shrimp you can see when you bite in, not ground-up shrimp. It comes with lettuce and a sauce like a tangier Big Mac sauce on a soft sesame bun. It's really good, and we highly recommend it.

3. McPork // Simple, Peppery, Better Than It Sounds
A plain bun, a thin pork patty that's almost like a sausage patty, lettuce, and a teriyaki-style sauce. The sauce is what makes it. Imagine a sausage patty on a bun with lettuce and a little teriyaki and you have the McPork.
4. Teriyaki McBurger // The McPork's Sweeter Sibling
The Teriyaki McBurger is very similar to the McPork, but with a sesame seed bun, mayonnaise, and a slightly different sauce. Cream ate them side by side to find the difference: the Teriyaki McBurger is sweeter, and the McPork has a stronger peppery flavor. He preferred the McPork. Pick the Teriyaki if you like mayo and sesame.

5. Grimace Shake and Fries // The Combo to Repeat
We had the Grimace Shake on our last trip to Japan too, and couldn't remember what it tasted like. It's creamy and a little sweet, and it tasted like grape ice cream to us (the official 2026 flavor was blueberry yogurt).4 We wish it were sold in the US. The fries are classic McDonald's fries, but dipping them in the purple shake is the combo we'd order again.

6. Fanta Melon // A Japan Staple Worth Trying
A very bright green soda that's everywhere in Japan, and Cream had never tried it. It was surprisingly good: fizzy with a real melon flavor. He'd get it again, and you can also order it as a float.

7. Shaka Shaka Chicken, Cheddar Cheese Flavor // The One to Skip
Shaka shaka is the sound of shaking. You get a fried chicken cutlet in a paper bag with a packet of cheddar seasoning, pour it in, close the bag, and shake. The instructions work: the chicken came out perfectly coated.
It was just okay, though. The chicken was a little dry, and the powdered cheese didn't taste much like cheese. It's a little sweet, with a seasoning we couldn't pinpoint. Fun to try once, but we probably won't order it again.

How Much McDonald's Costs in Japan
McDonald's in Japan is inexpensive by US standards. In May 2026, breakfast for the two of us (two drinks and six items) came to $17.26, and lunch (two drinks, five items, and fries) was $16.81.
What We'd Order Again (and What We'd Skip)
After two meals and 15 items, this is our shortlist:
- Order again: Chicken Tatsuta, Samurai Mac with egg and bacon, Ebi Filet-O, Grimace Shake with fries, Fanta Melon, Bacon Potato Pie.
- Fine, but you can get something similar at home: Mega Muffin, Chicken McNuggets (get them for the sauces).
- Skip: Shaka Shaka Chicken (cheddar) and the corn and edamame cup.
Is McDonald's in Japan Worth a Meal on Your Trip?
Yes, and it's a 10 out of 10 from us. One meal at McDonald's in Japan won't replace a bowl of ramen, but it shows you a side of everyday Japan (quiet, spotless, and full of locals eating in silence with headphones on) and a menu you won't find anywhere else. Order the Chicken Tatsuta or whatever the current promo is, add an Ebi Filet-O, and grab a Fanta Melon on the way out.
